Top Picks: The Latest Cars in South Africa (2025)

SUVs and Family Favourites

SUVs continue to be a favourite on South African roads, and several score impressively in 2025.

The Hyundai Tucson 2.0D Executive proved that mid-cycle updates can make a difference where it counts. With improved refinement, strong diesel performance, and value for money, the Tucson now competes more confidently with the likes of Volkswagen Tiguan and Kia Sportage.

Hyundai also impressed higher up on the scale with the Santa Fe Hybrid 1.6T Elite AWD. Its spacious cabin, smooth hybrid drivetrain and focus on comfort make it an appealing option for families looking for efficiency without sacrificing performance or comfort.

On the premium end, the BMW X3 20d xDrive M Sport and even the entry-level BMW X3 20 both achieved good scores. These models highlighted BMW’s ability to balance driver engagement with everyday comfort, confirming the X3’s status as a benchmark in the midsize premium SUV segment.

Compact Cars That Pack a Punch

Not all scorers were pricey or large. The Suzuki Swift 1.2 GLX MT emerged as one of the most impressive budget-friendly vehicles tested in 2025. Despite being the most affordable car on the list, it delivered excellent value, solid build quality, and engaging behaviour. It also secured top honours in CAR’s Budget Car category, proving the affordability doesn’t have to mean compromise.

On that note, the updated new Volkswagen T-Cross 1.0 TSI Style DSG stood out thanks to its subtle but meaningful upgrades. The enhanced materials and a noticeable step up in refinement ironed out earlier weaknesses, cementing its place as one of the strongest options in the compact crossover segment.

Electric and Hybrid Success

As far as electrification goes, Volvo’s EX30 Plus Single Motor stood out in the brand’s electric SUV lineup. While faster twin-motor versions exist, the Single Motor Plus strikes an excellent balance between performance, range, and affordability.

Another winning SUV was the BYD Sealion 6 Dynamic, the only Chinese brand on the list. Its refined hybrid powertrain, generous standard equipment and comfortable ride impressed the team, highlighting the growing competition of Chinese competitors.

A Closer Look at High-Performance Grandeur

For enthusiasts, 2025 delivered some unforgettable high-performance machines.

The Aston Martin Vantage Coupé surprised testers with its raw character. With a roaring V8 engine, newly updated interior and sharper dynamics, it showcased Aston Martin’s renewed focus on driver engagement.

SUVs weren’t excluded from the performance segment. The Audi RS Q8 Quattro performance delivered staggering power and luxury in equal measure, while the Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 S E performance set a new benchmark for acceleration, becoming the fastest SUV that’s been tested.

Meanwhile, the Land Rover Defender Octa Edition One brought serious off-road capability combined with a more focused, performance-driven edge, standing out as the most extreme Defender yet.

Porsche Reigns Supreme

At the top of the leaderboard sits the Porsche 911 Carrera Coupé PDK, earning the highest score of all vehicles tested in 2025. Despite being the entry point into Porsche's iconic 911 range, the Carrera delivered an exceptional blend of composure, precision and everyday usability.

Its ability to thrill on a twisty road while remaining intuitive in daily driving is exactly why Porsche remains the gold standard for sports cars, regardless of price or power.

The Porsche Cayenne GTS Coupé also impressed, offering a near-perfect balance between performance drama and long-distance comfort, proving that practicality and excitement need not be mutually exclusive.
