Hyundai’s Exter crossover

Calling all crossover fans! In this review, we take a look at what Hyundai's new compact crossover brings to the table. On top of its fun side,  it’s worth noting that the price is equally appealing. However, one does have to wonder how it compares to its derivatives and segment as a whole.

Meet Hyundai’s budget crossover: The Exter 1.2 Executive MT

The Hyundai Exter 1.2 Executive MT is Hyundai’s newest addition to the compact crossover segment, offering a blend of practicality, modern styling, and affordability. Designed to cater to young city dwellers and first-time SUV buyers, the five trim levels of the Exter combine the convenience of a hatchback with the rugged flair of an SUV. With the range starting from R269,900, here’s what makes this micro-SUV worth considering.

An urban-friendly ‘rugged’ design

The new crossover introduces several design updates while maintaining Hyundai's signature style. Based on the Grand i10 platform, the vehicle features a raised ride height (185 mm) and slightly larger dimensions, contributing to its SUV-like profile. The Executive model is equipped with halogen headlights, LED DRLs, basic steel wheels, and manual folding side mirrors, exuding a clean and simple aesthetic. Mudguards on the front and rear enhance its rugged appeal, though the rear design has received mixed reviews for being less cohesive compared to the rest of the vehicle's styling. Hence, the slight upgrade in design and price difference between the trims.

As for the Elite model and Premium trim, notable design elements include a glossy black radiator grille, muscular wheel arches, stylish roof rails, 15-inch alloy wheels, electric folding side mirrors, and H-shaped LED daytime running lights. Both models also offer dual-tone paint options and chrome accents for a more refined finish.

  Interior features and comfort

Once you step inside the Executive model, you’ll notice that much of the dashboard is predominantly plastic compared to the Premium and Elite models. However, if you’re not overly concerned about style, you’ll still appreciate the cabin’s comfort and the space this crossover offers. There’s ample headroom and legroom for a vehicle of this size, making it perfect for small families who value practicality. The black cloth seats and leather-trimmed steering wheel are also easy to clean, thanks to the combination of fabric upholstery and vinyl surfaces.

At the front of the cabin, Hyundai’s Executive model features an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless connectivity to Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It also includes an analogue instrument cluster with a small digital screen for trip information. A thoughtful addition is the inclusion of a fast-charging USB-C port alongside the standard USB-A port for both the driver and passenger. The driver has steering wheel multifunction controls that operate Bluetooth with voice recognition.

The storage and manual air conditioning capabilities are suitable for a budget vehicle, but upgrading to the Premium or Elite model will offer additional features such as automatic climate control, a digital instrument cluster, and other premium features.

Ultimately, it comes down to what you’re looking for in your Hyundai, both inside and out. For budget-conscious drivers, simplicity may be the preferred choice, while for those focused on interior features, a touch of ‘premium-ness’ may be appealing.

Remember, enjoying your driving experience is just as important as getting the most out of your vehicle’s overall performance. This is just something to keep in mind.

The nippy Executive performance and drive

With an economics-friendly fuel consumption of 5.7l to 6.1l/100km with an engine that delivers 61 kW and 114 torque power that you’ll feel the nippy Executive MT drive in a matter of minutes. In fact, all MT and AMT  models share the same specs in terms of performance and transmission speed. The powertrain really does put thrust into the drive when manoeuvring through urban traffic.   However, the drive experience differs for the higher-trims in the way cruise control and stability control is concerned.

Safety behind the wheel

Standard safety features across the five derivatives include curtain airbags, ABS and EBD, remote keyless entry, central locking, rear park assist with a camera, child locks, and ISOFIX. Although these safety features may seem basic when compared to other crossovers in its segment, they’re precisely what you need in order to travel safely at a satisfactory level—nothing too ‘techy’ or overly complicated.

Verdict: The perfect companion for small families and urban living

For the everyday city dweller or small family, the Exter crossover range is a wonderful choice. It’s also a practical, no-frills choice for first-time SUV buyers or those upgrading from a hatchback. As one of Hyundai’s many versatile models, it offers something for everyone and certainly gives you more bang for your buck. Whether you’re focused on staying within budget or looking to go bigger, it’s definitely worth considering.
