September’s Top 5 Best-Selling Cars in South Africa

South Africa’s Top 5 Best-Selling Cars: September Overview

With South Africa’s new car sales reaching their highest level in the last decade, the industry is buzzing with excitement. Not only has the total number of vehicles sold increased considerably, but several automakers have also dominated the charts.  Now more than ever, it’s the perfect time to have a closer look at the brands that continue to make their mark with some of South Africa’s best-selling cars.

A Record-Breaking Month for New Cars

In September 2025, South Africa’s new car market sold a staggering 54,700 vehicles, marking a 24% increase compared to September 2024. This increase represents the highest single month of sales in a decade. For three months in a row, new vehicle sales in South Africa have exceeded the 50,000-unit mark, showing strong and consistent consumer demand.

Interestingly, exports are also making headway. South African car exports rose 33% year-on-year, despite global supply chain disruptions and US automotive tariffs.

According to Naamsa, the South African automotive industry body, this growth driven by four key factors:

  • Easing inflation and relative stability in fuel prices.
  • The South African Reserve Bank managed to hold steady interest rates, encouraging buyers to finance their vehicles.
  • A wider variety of imported models, giving buyers more choice.
  • Positive consumer and business confidence in the economy.

Who’s Buying New Cars in South Africa?

Most of September’s sales were dealer sales, making up 80% of the market, while 15% of sales went to rental companies, and smaller percentages to corporate fleets and government buyers. This mix shows a strong appetite for private vehicle ownership alongside fleet demand.

Passenger cars led the market with 38,603 units sold, a 28% increase from last year, while light-commercial vehicles (LCVs), such as bakkies and vans, also saw sturdy growth, with 13,078 units sold, an increase of 20% year-on-year.

What’s Driving the Best-Selling Car Market?

Industry experts attribute this growth to a combination of affordability, confidence, and market dynamics. Brandon Cohen, Chairperson of the National Automobile Dealers’ Association (NADA), highlighted that both consumer and dealer confidence are looking strong. WesBank’s Lebo Gaoaketse also noted that the stability of interest rates and the improved performance of the rand have contributed to record levels of finance applications for new cars in South Africa

The 5 Best-Selling Cars in South Africa

So, what are the best-selling cars in South Africa? September 2025 offers clear proof of what brands and models are leading the market. Based on total sales, the top five best-selling cars in South Africa for the month are:

1. Toyota

Toyota continues to dominate the market, selling 14,146 units this September. This stands for 25.9% of the total market, and it’s the first time Toyota has surpassed 14,000 units in over three years. Known for reliability, resale value and a wide range of models – including sedans, SUVs, and bakkies – Toyota’s popularity stays strong.

2. Suzuki

Suzuki holds the second spot with 6,072 units sold. Compact and affordable vehicle sales drove the brand’s successful sales, which appeal to first-time buyers and those looking for cost-effective options without compromising on quality. Suzuki’s steady performance shows it is still a key player in South Africa’s automotive landscape.

3. Volkswagen

Volkswagen’s sales reached 5,763 units, supporting third place. VW’s strong presence in both passenger cars and commercial vehicles make it a versatile choice. The brand continues to appeal to buyers looking for a balance between performance, style, and value.

4. Ford

Ford climbed to fourth place, selling 3,093 units. This fierce competitive brand has made a comeback this year, with a variety of models hitting the 3,000-unit mark for the second time.

5. Hyundai

Rounding out the top five, Hyundai sold 3,005 units. Hyundai has consistently offered value-for-money vehicles, blending modern design, efficient engines, and affordable pricing. Its demand stays strong in urban areas where prospective buyers are in the market for compact sedans and SUVs.

Market Trends and Our Future

South Africa’s automotive market expects to stabilise as we enter the final quarter of 2025. Analysts suggest that with lower interest rates, it could potentially encourage purchases of higher-value vehicles.

However, there are three specific risks to consider:

  • Rising costs of imported fuel.
  • Global trade uncertainties, including tariffs affecting exports.
  • Affordability constraints, which may continue to push some buyers towards used vehicles

Even so, experts see promise for continued growth. Compared to 2015, South Africans are holding onto their vehicles for longer periods, which means the current surge in sales is a positive indicator for future replacement cycles. As disposable income gradually increases, demand for new cars is likely to remain hopeful.
