Suzuki’s New Compact SUV Set to Launch in 2026

Exciting News as Suzuki’s New Compact SUV is Scheduled to Launch in 2026

The Suzuki Across first made its debut in India as the Victoris back in September 2025, before being showcased at the 2-25 Japan Mobility Show in Tokyo the following month.  Here in South Africa, it will carry the Across nameplate – a name Suzuki has long ago trademarked locally, alongside the Moniker, which was registered in March 2025.

Suzuki Auto SA suggests the Across will sit at the top of its local line-up, potentially above the Grand Vitara. This makes sense considering the recent trimming of the Grand Vitara range, where the mid-spec GLX manual and flagship GLX mild-hybrid AWD variants were discontinued. With those gone, the stage is set for the Across to own the spotlight.

A Closer Look at the Suzuki Compact SUV

Dimensions and Platform

The Across is built on the same Global C Platform as the Grand Vitara, sharing its 2 600mm wheelbase. Measuring 4 360 mm from nose to tail, it’s just a touch longer than the Grand Vitara – enough to give it a more commanding presence without drastically changing its footprint.

The Cabin: Safety and Technology

Safety and tech are clearly big talking points for the Suzuki. Right out the gate, it comes loaded with six airbags, ABS, and electronic stability control, and it’s already proven its credibility with a five-star Global NCAP safety rating

Should you opt for the top model and you’ll get a suite of driver-assistance features, including lane keep assist, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, and high-beam assist to take some of the stress out of long drives.

Inside, the Across leans into comfort and convenience. Every model gets a 7-inch infotainment screen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as a standard, so plugging in cables is a thing of the past one could say. Step up to the high-spec version and the cabin feels more premium, with leatherette upholstery, a wireless phone charger, and a larger 10.1 touchscreen. You also gain useful everyday extras like a 360-degree parking camera, a hands-free power tailgate, electrically adjustable front seats, and an eight-speaker Infinity sound system for a richer audio experience.

According to Suzuki Auto South Africa’s brand marketing manager, Brendan Carpenter, the Across plays a key role in the brand’s local plans. The Suzuki compact SUV is expected to appeal to families and those who enjoy getting away on weekends.

Powertrain Options

In India, the Victoris comes with a few engine options. The base model uses Suzuki’s tried-and-tested 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder petrol engine in a mild-hybrid setup, producing 76 kW and 139 Nm. Buyers can choose between a 5-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic, with all-wheel drive on the top-end version.

For those looking for something greener, there’s also a Toyota-sourced 1.5-litre, 3-cylinder hybrid with a CVT, combining a petrol engine, electric motor, and battery pack. Indian buyers can even opt for a CNG variant, highlighting Suzuki’s versatility in catering to different energy needs.

While Suzuki Auto SA hasn’t confirmed which powertrains will make it to South Africa, they assured that the Across model will come with a “highly efficient petrol engine that delivers confident, reliable performance.”

Suzuki Compact SUV Pricing

While local pricing hasn’t been announced yet, the Across is expected to sit above the Grand Vitara which currently retails between R359,900 and R453,900. Given Suzuki’s strong position in the market, South Africa’s second most popular new-car brand, ahead of Volkswagen and just behind Toyota, the Across looks ready to arrive with plenty of momentum.

With pricing still on the cards, first-time buyers looking for a more budget-friendly option can consider one of Suzuki’s more affordable mini SUVs.

Final Thoughts: Will the Across be the Best Compact SUV in South Africa?

The Suzuki Across looks like a great fit for people who want a car that effortlessly balances everyday life with weekend plans. It’s well suited to families who need space for kids, prams, school bags, and groceries, while still offering plenty of room for luggage, gear, or equipment when it’s time for a road trip

The features make it incredibly practical for long road trips, school runs, and daily commutes. Perfect for active couples, young families, and outdoor-loving drivers who want a reliable, easy-to-live with compact SUV that can take on busy schedules and fun adventures.
