The when, who and how of towing your car

5 July 2016

You stand with tears in your eyes, not knowing whether or not your precious wheels – your pride and joy – is going to be okay. After randomly choosing one of the 10 tow-away vehicles who arrived on the scene within half an hour, they push your car up on the trailer and secure it. You check that there is no way it will fall off and be damaged any further.

Having your car towed is not an easy exercise. We’re here to help you understand this process and plan ahead.

When would I need to get my car towed?

No one likes to think about the possibility of ourselves or our loved ones being in a car accident or a breakdown situation. But - unfortunately - these nightmare scenarios do happen, and when they do, you need to know how you are going to get yourself and your car out of harm’s way (rush hour traffic).

Firstly, it is important to take a moment to calm down and assess the situation. Look around you - are you in danger of being hit by oncoming traffic? If you can, move your car to a safe area, put your hazard lights on and put out your warning triangle to warn other motorists of an accident or breakdown ahead. These triangles should be placed around 200 feet or 45 metres from your car.

Once you have ensured that everyone involved is okay and has been attended to, you still need help, you can’t just leave your car stranded and alone. You need to be towed, but who are you going to call?

Who should I trust to tow my car?

We’ve all heard the horror stories of friends and family who had their car towed by the first guy on the scene only to receive a massive bill from a towing and storage facility on the other side of town - and to find a new dent or scratch which occurred during towing.

To avoid ending up in a similar situation, only rely on reputable towing companies you know. A great way to build this trust would be by purchasing a roadside assistance package* which includes a tow-in service.

Along with other benefits like car rental, overnight accommodation and jump-start service, investing in roadside assistance* is the best way to prepare for a tow-away - before you need it.

How much will it cost me?

If included in your roadside assistance* package, your tow-away may not even cost you a cent more than you are paying toward your plan.

On the other hand, if you decide to simply use the towing services of John Doe, your bill could reach thousands of rands – a lot of cash just to move your wheels to safety.
