Part 2: The top two #UltimateJourney destinations in each province

Time is ticking and soon we will finalise South Africa’s most epic road trip route – the Ultimate Journey, created and voted by South Africans who have explored our beautiful country!

In this blog post, we continue with our spotlight on the current top two destinations per province. (Don’t miss out on Part 1 where we explored Northern Cape, Eastern Cape, Western Cape and Free State.

In Limpopo

The northern-most province of South Africa, named after the Limpopo River, is a great destination to explore.

Top of the votes is Magoebaskloof with 64 votes from our community. Magoebaskloof is known as “the land of silver mist” and if it’s adventure, fishing, hiking or spectacular winding roads you’re after, Magoebaskloof is it!

Voter NathiMabitsela loves the magical mountain mists that blanket the land, and she’s also a fan of the wildlife and mineral rich hot springs. MargaHagens calls it “an inspiring place, with beautiful mountains, misty days, unique birds, forests and people.”

Currently in second place, with 30 votes is the Mapungubwe National Park. This beautiful game reserve in northern Limpopo is where archeologists excavated the famous golden rhino.

Voter Michael Benn says the massive Baobab trees are a must see and suggests that “a camera and hiking boots will be your best friend”. Chantal Rossouw calls it “an archeological wonder” and she would know, since she herself is an archeologist. Chantal says, “Imagination can’t go nearly as far as physically being there.”

In the North West

Leading the way in the North West Province, is the ever popular fun in the sun resort, Sun City coming in with 178 votes, plus a further 32 votes on the Sun City Resort page

Most of our voters have raved about the Valley of the Waves and if you’re a Joburger, Sun City is certainly the closest road trip feel the “beach” sand between your toes.

In second place, with 114 votes is the Pilanesberg National Park. This enclosed game reserve is home to the Big Five, and promises big game viewing in a malaria free environment.

Voter Ullricke Van Zyl says she’s been there a few times and just loves the bush and all the wild animals. Ingrid Sawyer says, “it’s just what you need: peace and quiet”, while Isa Carter says she always has an amazing time, with incredible sightings.

Speaking of sightings, Odette Povey said her favourite moment was watching a warthog mom and her babies frolicking in the rain.

In Kwa-Zulu Natal

Leading the votes for the province is Saint Lucia, with 124 votes and counting.

Voter Lia Glad named it “Paradise at your doorstep”, while Baseria Van Rensburg voted for it because of its “beautiful scenery, long stretches of unspoiled beaches and wildlife”. Baseria also loves the beautiful sunsets and fairy cruisers in this quaint and charming town.

If you’re into a little ocean experience, Jeanette Rivers says the snorkeling is awesome, and if game viewing is your preference, Wilma Koekemoer says that the “best game viewings are on a short strip of road in Cape Vidal”.

In second place is of course, SA’s number one playground, Durban with 119 votes.

Voter Christian Heine said it best, when he called Durban a place “all about family and fun in the sun”. Olga Rosales loves the golden beaches, the lights and sounds and night, and so many voters have hyped the friendliness of the people of Durbs.

In Mpumalanga

Just 3 hours outside of Jozi, the province of Mpumalanga awaits. Known as “Paradise Country” the name literally translates to “Place where the Sun Rises”.

Taking the top spot for Mpumalanga, with 325 votes is the Kruger National Park, which is currently holding the number one spot as the #UltimateJourney destination in all of SA.

Tourists from all over the world flock to this iconic national park to explore the very best of South Africa’s wildlife. Voter Collen Mndluli says “its always warm” and that the Big Five can easily be spotted, especially during winter. Hugo Troskie believes the Kruger National Park “is the only one true place in South Africa to experience wildlife and flora in its natural beauty”.

In second position, with 167 votes is the splendorous God’s Window, a scenic pleasure of magnificent views, canyons, rock formations and waterfalls.

Voter Adele Van Zyl says’ it’s always green and has an amazing view, and is quite simply “beautiful to see God’s Creation from the top.” Voter Lesley Sauls says one must do the hiking trail that starts at God’s Window, while Martin MazmaSefoloshe is drawn to its romanceand suggests it as a great spot for a proposal.

In Gauteng

Ahhh Gauteng… There may not be a beach nearby, but South Africa’s business capital has so many gems to explore.

In the top position, with 59 votes is the Cradle of Humankind, a world heritage site since 1999.

Set in “what feels like the middle of nowhere” according to voter Marie-Jose Stern, here is where you can explore 40% of the world’s human ancestor fossils.

While you’re there, take in the tranquil surroundings and if time permits, a visit to the Sterkfontein Caves is a must!

Why should you go? Voter Mala Naidoo explains that it will “shed light on the origins of humankind”, making it a great destination to discover and learn.

In second place as Gauteng’s hot spot is The Voortrekker Monument with 32 votes and counting…

Set on top of a hill with panoramic views of Pretoria, this huge granite structure was built in honour of the Voortrekkers, who left the Cape Colony between 1835 and 1854.
