2022 Toyota Hilux Double Cab Legendary RS – The Most Rugged and Capable Pickup Truck In The Range

South Africa’s most popular Bakkie is back on top of the sales chart as Toyota reopened its factory in Durban. The sales are also partly up due to the all-new Hilux Double Cab Legendary RS model featuring bold exterior and interior styling as well as a more powerful 2.8-litre turbo diesel engine.

Although Toyota offers the new Hilux Double Cab in a variety of trim levels with different engine choices and amenities, we will focus primarily on the new Legendary RS model in this review.

2022 Toyota Hilux Double Cab Legendary RS Review

The Legendary RS is the flagship model in the Double Cab configuration that carries a 2.8-litre four-cylinder turbo diesel engine generating 150 kW and 500 Nm of torque when mating to a 6-speed automatic transmission. The torque delivery differs (420 Nm at 1400/3400 r/min) for the manual transmission model. Both transmissions send power to all the wheels.

Toyota claims 7.9L/100km fuel economy with the manual and just a touch higher - 8.0L/100Km - for the automatic variant.

The Hilux Double Cab Legendary RS stands out due to its aggressive LED headlights, black engine hood moulding, and dark treatment on door handles, side mirrors, and fenders.

The aggressive front end joins the muscularly styled rear, featuring an automatic roller shutter tonneau cover, a rubberized load box, a central locking tailgate, and a tough sports bar.

The Legendary RS gives buyers ten exterior colour choices, including glacier white, platinum white pearl, chromium silver, graphite grey metallic, attitude black, sand beige, inferno metallic, cosmic blue, Arizona red, and oxide bronze.

The outer strength meets with the inner comfort through premium leather and ambient blue line radiance integrated into the door rim.

The Hilux Legendary RS entrusts the entertainment duties to an 8.0-inch touchscreen multimedia system supporting Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The amenities like JBL premium sound system, including 9 speakers, updated dual-zone climate control air conditioning, and smart entry are also part of the standard package.

Toyota offers a wide range of exterior and interior accessories to give your Hilux a distinct look. The exterior accessories comprise a spare wheel lock, exhaust tip, safety film kit, bakkie rails, Bin lining, canvas cover, deck mat, door handle protection film, bike holders, nudge bar, fixed tow bar, bonnet protector, and so much more.

The interior accessories list isn’t long; pay extra for a wireless charger, hood lift assist, digital video recorder, and rubber floor mat.

Toyota has fitted its advanced Safety Sense suite to ensure passengers’ safety in the new Hilux Legendary RS. The active safety facilities include a Pre-crash system, Lane Keeping Assist with Lane Departure Alert, and Adaptive Cruise Control.

Besides, the Legendary RS adds convenience to your drives through the front and rear Park Distance Control sensors, reverse camera, and Electrochromatic rear-view mirror to eliminate glare.

The Legendary RS is the most expensive model in the Hilux Double Cab range. The manual variant starts at R883,100, while the automatic model demands a whopping R917,900. Both the models come with a 3-year/100,000km warranty and a 9-services/90,000 km service plan.

The Legendary RS is not only proficient on-road but is also equally capable off-road, thanks to Downhill Assist Control, stopping the wheels from locking, and Limited Slip Differential, offering maximum traction during wheel spinning conditions.
