The new Kia Sportage comes with turbo petrol-diesel variants

The 2023 Kia Sportage landed in Mzansi in September last year featuring a bold new face, highly advanced technologies, and a livelier petrol engine. The fifth-generation Sportage borrows the platform, tech, and powertrains from the Hyundai Tucson and now Kia South Africa has introduced a trio of 1.6-litre turbodiesel derivatives.

Kia initially offered the 2023 Sportage in five trim levels: LX, EX, GT-Line, GT-Line Plus, and GT-Line S. All variants are powered by a 1.6-litre direct injection turbo-petrol mill, churning out 132kW at 5500r/min and 265Nm accessible between 1500 and 4500 r/min. The Sportage is a front-wheel SUV propelled by a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. Kia rates the 0-100 km/h performance in 8.8 seconds and a top speed of 201 km/h

The Sportage diesel comes in three variants (LX, EX, and GT-Line Plus) featuring a turbocharged 1.6-litre 4-cylinder diesel engine creating 100 kW and 320 Nm of torque. The drivetrain remains the same as the petrol model.

The automaker claims the diesel-powered Sportage can zoom to 100 kph from a standstill position in 11.4 seconds, tops out at 180 km/h, and consumes 4.9 litres to cover 100 km.

The Sportage LX stands out as the most affordable option in the lineup and is remarkably well-equipped for an entry-level model.

The amenities comprise 17-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, comfortable fabric upholstery, dual-zone climate regulator, Smart Entry with push-button start, a leather-wrapped multi-function steering wheel, and mechanically operated folding mirrors. Additionally, it comes equipped with a 12.3" curved infotainment system. Driver Assist systems such as Blind Spot Crash Alert, Downhill Brake Assist, and Trailer Stability Control provide added safety, complementing the six airbags.

Stepping up a level, the Sportage EX adds 18-inch alloys and a sleek shiny black grille. Inside, the cabin features a combination of fabric and faux leather upholstery, along with heated front and back seats and a heated steering wheel. Mechanically operated front seats, front parking sensors, and remote-folding rear seat backs are also part of the deal.

At the top end of the range, the GT-Line models take the experience to a new level. Building upon the EX model, the entry-level GT Line boasts alloy pedals, paddle shifters, and a combination of suede and faux leather upholstery. The safety improvements encompass an electric tailgate, Lane Follow Assist, Lane Keep Assist, and Forward Accident Prevention Assist.

With even more premium features, the GT-Line Plus model introduces 19-inch alloy wheels, sleek shiny black exterior trim, LED interior lighting, and a panoramic glass sunroof.

The flagship GT-Line S is top-of-the-line. It includes smart cruise control, ventilated front seats, Smart Front Lighting, a mechanical shift-by-wire rotating gearshift knob, and a link turning system for the Forward Accident Prevention Assist.

Every vehicle in the lineup is accompanied by Kia's reliable warranty, ensuring unlimited kilometres or 5 years of coverage, along with the added convenience of Roadside Assistance. Additionally, customers can enjoy a pre-paid service plan spanning 6 years or 90,000 kilometres, providing them with reassurance and a clear understanding of their vehicle's maintenance needs.

The entry-level Kia P Sportage 1.6T-GDi LX starts at R567 995, while the top-of-the-range Kia Sportage 1.6T-GDi GT Line S is R762 995. (Prices correct at time of publication.)
