While you might just want to snuggle indoors at home, there are some wonderful winter spots that are well worth heading out to Winter is here, which means poor weather and extended periods indoors. But after days of being stuck indoors, there’s nothing better than putting down the soup, stretching those legs and heading outside for some much-needed fresh air. Even better, jump in a car and head out of Cape Town for a night away in the wintery surrounds. Here are six great places to road trip around Cape Town:

 

Wolseley

Just 90 minutes outside the Mother City, Wolseley is a sleepy village tucked between the Matroosberg and Winter mountains. With easy entrances to Tulbagh and Ceres, it’s the perfect location to visit the Matroosberg mountains to play in the snow.

Stellenbosch

There’s not much better in winter than watching the rain fall while sipping on deep red, full-bodied wines in the middle of winter. Home to many of South Africa’s best wine brands, Stellenbosch plays host to visitors and locals alike, with more than 150 wine farms in the area. Watch the rain fall across the valleys from Uva Mira, Hidden Valley or Tokara, before heading back to keep warm for the evening.

NUY Valley

Located on the R60, just after Worcester, the NUY valley is a popular wedding and function venue location. It’s home to Willow Creek Olive Estate and the Nuy Wine Cellar, and you can spend the afternoon taking the “Follow the Olive” factory tour to learn how Willow Creek’s extra virgin olive oil is created before indulging in their award-winning olive oil and olive products.

Darling

Snuggle up next to a big farmhouse style fire in the charming town of Darling. It’s less than an hour away from Cape Town, and here you can be entertained at Tannie Evita Se Peron. or sample craft beers at Darling Brewery. Family friendly, the little village is a great way to tuck yourself away for a weekend with good company.

Misty Cliffs

Nestled on the steep Cape Peninsula mountains, Misty Cliffs is an exclusive conservation village that boats less than 100 plots in its uncapacious setting. Situated on the western side of Cape Point, Misty Cliffs has beautiful views across the Atlantic, providing a perfect perch from which to watch the winter storms passing the Cape of Good Hope.

Franschhoek

Spoil yourself with a weekend away in the food capital of South Africa. Visit one of Franschhoek’s illustrious array of fine dining restaurants, a great way to spend a wintery afternoon or evening.
