Best Road Trips Within 2 Hours of Johannesburg and Cape Town

We've previously shared three short road trips from Cape Town and rounded up some of the best routes to travel in South Africa. This time we're widening the net to cover both major metros in one place, with a fresh set of destinations for each city.

Whether you're based in Gauteng or the Western Cape, here are seven destinations worth the tank of fuel, none of them more than two hours from the city centre.

From Johannesburg

Around an hour from Johannesburg, Hartbeespoort, or 'Harties' as locals call it, remains one of Gauteng's most dependable weekend escapes. The dam sits beneath the Magaliesberg mountain range, and the cableway ride up the mountain offers one of the best panoramic views in the province. Markets, cafes, and boat cruises round out an easy day trip.

Roughly 50 minutes from the city, the Cradle of Humankind is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the richest fossil sites on earth. The Maropeng visitor centre and the Sterkfontein Caves make for a half-day outing that is educational without feeling like homework, and it is an easy add-on if you are also headed towards Hartbeespoort or the Magaliesberg.

About an hour and twenty minutes south of Johannesburg on the banks of the Vaal River, Parys has quietly built a reputation as one of Gauteng's favourite small-town escapes. Fishing, river rafting, and a walkable strip of antique shops and coffee spots make it an easy, low-effort weekend away.

A little further out at around two hours, Dullstroom rewards the extra driving time. Sitting high in the Mpumalanga escarpment, it is South Africa's fly-fishing capital, with a cool climate, cosy pubs, and a genuinely different feel from the Highveld. It works well as a first night stop if you're continuing on towards the Panorama Route or the Kruger area.

From Cape Town

Around 45 minutes from the city centre, Stellenbosch remains the obvious choice for a wine-focused day trip, but it earns its reputation. Oak-lined streets, Cape Dutch architecture, and a dense concentration of excellent wine estates make it easy to fill a full day without ever driving more than a few minutes between stops.

At just under two hours from Cape Town, Hermanus is one of the best land-based whale watching spots in the world, with Southern Right whales visible from the cliff path in season, typically June to November. Outside whale season, the coastal walk and the town's growing food scene still make the drive worthwhile.

Just over two hours up the West Coast, Paternoster is a small fishing village known for its whitewashed cottages and relaxed pace. It is slightly further than most 'two hour' lists stretch, but it is worth the extra twenty minutes for anyone wanting a coastal escape that feels genuinely removed from the city, with excellent seafood along the way.

Getting the Most Out of a Short Road Trip

  • Fill up before you leave the city. Fuel stations thin out once you're off the main routes.
  • Check your tyre pressure and oil before any road trip, even a short one. Short trips still put real strain on a vehicle that hasn't been checked in a while.
  • Build in one unplanned stop. Some of the best finds on these routes are the small towns and farm stalls you weren't specifically looking for.

If you're planning to turn any of these into an overnight stay, our road trip travel checklist covers the basic vehicle checks worth doing before you leave, and our guide on how to pack your car for a road trip will help you avoid a boot full of chaos, even for a one-night trip.

You don't need a long weekend or a week of leave to get real value out of a road trip. Both Johannesburg and Cape Town sit within easy reach of destinations that feel like a proper escape, whether that's a mountain dam, a fossil site, a wine estate, or a whale-watching cliff path.
