Behind the Launch: South Africa Welcomes the New Kia Carens SUV 

Kia owners can look forward to the latest comeback to Kia’s SUV lineup. South Africa’s car market saw the Indian-built fourth-generation Kia Carens launch across showrooms in May 2026, and it took the traditional seven-seater vehicle to the next level. Some reviews say that this vehicle has combined modern SUV styling with MPV practicality, a multi-utility vehicle. Plus, pricing from the brand seems fairly sensible for what consumers are getting. 

Despite the ongoing trend of competitive Chinese SUVs in South Africa’s market, this hasn’t deterred Kia from reaching sustainable growth and progress over the last few years, especially under the watchful eye of CEO Paul Turnbull. It’s known to most in the car industry that Kia has become one of the top fast-growing brands in the country, seeing a 23% increase in sales from June 2025 to March 2026. Kia South Africa’s CEO, Paul Turnbull, had this to say in their May press release, “The Kia Carens offers everything that families could ever want, in a package that is modern, good looking, and powered by our renowned diesel engine, which offers a great balance between performance and efficiency. We are extremely excited to add this model to our ever-expanding product range.” He even told News24 that to launch modern products while remaining competitive is about competitive pricing, which is what we’re seeing with the new Carens. 

So, it’s clear that they know what South Africans are looking for, and there’s no doubt about it when you consider the pricing and sales to back it up.

About the New Car Specs

Design & Interior

We all know that not every variant will share the same new-car specs, but Kia has made sure to include the best quality standards across the range. 

For a futuristic look and feel, the design shows off a bold look thanks to its ambient, but minimalist front, striking Star Map LED tail lamp lighting and futuristic-looking daytime running lights. 

Features vary from one variant to the next. For example, the LS model offers drivers an 8-inch system and 16-inch alloy wheels, while the LX offers drivers an automatic transmission, 17-inch alloy wheels, roof rails, Bose music sound system, and much more.

Interior features include a ‘wide, dual-panoramic display', with a 12.3-inch infotainment system and a 12-inch TFT digital integrated cluster system. The selection offers everything you need to power up an entertaining drive with your loved ones.

Power and Performance

South Africa’s models are offered exclusively as a 1.5-litre turbocharged diesel engine (similar to that from the Hyundai-Kia Group stable), producing 85 kW at 4,000 rpm and 250 Nm to the front of the vehicle. Let’s not forget about expecting a steady and smooth drive with help from the McPherson strut front suspension.

With an average fuel consumption of 5,0 litres per 100 km on a manual gearbox or 5.3 litres per 100 km using an automatic gearbox, this is incredibly ideal for balancing performance with efficiency, especially if you’re out on the open road.
