Q&A with the president of the Lamborghini Club

Without any doubt, the Lamborghini Club ticks the box as one of the most exciting car clubs in South Africa. We caught up with the club president, Grant Mason, to find out more about the club – and of course the joys of owning and driving one of the most exotic cars on South Africa’s roads.

MH: How did you become the president of the Lamborghini Club?

Grant: In 2014, the previous president of the club moved to the UK and I became the Lamborghini Club president. At that point, no one else wanted to run the club I was excited by the opportunity to revive this exotic car club.

MH: How can a person join the Lamborghini Club?

Firstly, you must prove you own a Lamborghini. Secondly, you’ll have to pay a R4000 annual fee to join the club and to participate in the Lamborghini events.

MH: How many members are part of the club?

The Lamborghini Club currently consists of 72 members, which has grown impressively from only six members in 2015.

MH: What type of events do the members of the Lamborghini Club get involved in?

Go Karts is a big favourite for the members of the club and each year, members can participate in a Le Mans style go-kart event. This involves members changing drivers every 20 min after racing.

Weekends away are also very popular. Sabie in Mpumalanga is one of our top destinations because of the smooth windy roads along the route to Sabie. Once a year the club does the Lamborghini Factory Tour in Bologna, Italy.

Every month the club goes on a breakfast run, and this year was the first year doing the Cape Rally, which was highly successful. The Cape Rally is a five-day road trip through the Western Cape. Some of Mossel Bay’s roads were shut down so the Lamborghini Club could pass through without having to worry about other vehicles on the road.

MH: How does car insurance work for these types of supercars?

The insurance works very similarly to normal car insurance but has different clauses and extensions. The rating is also lower than normal. Some of the clauses and extensions include; selecting a nominated driver, unlimited mileage cover and discounts on advanced driving courses. There is no penalty on 30 to 50 years olds supercar owners.

MH: Is this your first Lamborghini?

My first Lamborghini was a 5.0 litre V10 Gallardo. I currently own a Lamborghini Huracan, which is my second one. The Lamborghini Huracan has a 5.2 litre V10 that produces 610hp/ 449 kW and manages to reach 100kph in just 3.2 seconds.

MH: What are some of the biggest pros and cons of owning a supercar in South Africa?

The main disadvantages of owning a supercar are the judgment you receive from the public, like rude comments and negative attitudes. I’ve even had people perch on the bonnet of my car and take photos while I’ve been sitting in the Lamborghini!

However, these experiences are countered when I come across people who are just as passionate as I am about supercars. It’s great seeing their excitement.

Speed bumps and road conditions are also a big concern for a supercar owner.

Ultimately, the thrill passion of owning and driving a supercar is by far the biggest advantage for any true car enthusiast. Some people buy a supercar as an investment, others will buy a supercar to boost their social status and to look good. However, the majority of the Lamborghini Club members buy a supercar for the driving pleasure and high-performance figures.
