Would you buy an armoured vehicle?

It’s no secret that South Africa has one of the world’s highest crime rates, and although the authorities are doing their best to ensure that the country is a lot safer for everyone, many people are taking charge of their personal safety with improved home security. Is the next logical step armoured cars, to keep us safe on the roads?

Car theft and hijacking are two of the most widespread crimes in the country. Recent figures from the SAPS show that at least 50 cars are stolen every day in South Africa with most robberies occurring in highly populated areas. It is against this backdrop that people must take extra precautionary steps to keep both their lives and property safe.

While many might view armoured or bulletproof cars as a luxury or for only high-profile figures, South Africa’s crime statistics seem to suggest that these cars are more of a necessity. As you might have guessed, an armoured car comes at a steep price. However, interest in armoured vehicles is growing. According to Autotrader CEO George Mienie, the phrase “armoured vehicles” was the third most searched for term on their website in September, and he expects the interest to continue rising.

Like in most parts of the world, car armouring isn’t exactly a cheap endeavour. In the United States, it costs at least $58,0000 (R8.5 million) for a full-body car armour, and in Europe, prices aren’t too different. In South Africa, one has to part with at least R580,000 for the most basic level of armouring, known as B4. In an interview with MyBroadband, Grant Anderson, Managing Director Armormax, explained the different levels of armouring:

  • Level B4 armouring – Protects against handguns up to the .44 Magnum. Armour for windows, doors, and rear seats, with various extras. Starting from R580,000.
  • Level B6 armouring – Protects against high-powered rifles like the R5 and AK47. Armour for doors, windows, pillars, roof, floor, vehicle structural modifications and a number of other advanced features. Starting from R1.5 million.

At these prices it’s pretty impossible for the average South African to drive an armoured car. However, there are things you can do to help you stay safe, and hopefully avoid vehicle crime such as hijacking.
