Google Maps

There are several popular mapping apps around, but Google Maps gets a big nod for being accurate and user friendly and being able to find the fastest re-routes when there’s traffic or an accident.

Free on Android and iOS.

Spotify

Spotify is one of the most-loved digital music, podcast and video streaming services, and it gives you access to millions of songs and other content from artists all over the world. You can create your own playlists of favourite songs, or you can search from the thousands on the platform already. There are loads of driving playlists, so you’re likely to find something well suited to your ride.

The basic service is free on Android and iOS. Spotify offers a free 30-day trial of the Premium service. If you opt for it, you’ll pay R130 per month.

AA

If you’re a member of the AA, you can get emergency medical or roadside assistance via the app. Non-members can still access the app -there’s a route planner to help you plan your daily commutes and road trips, plus currenttraffic updates and road condition reports, and fuel price alerts. You can also calculate vehicle running costs with an in-app vehicle rates calculator.

Fuel Buddy

This app does so much, from track your car’s mileage (great if you’re claiming travel for tax purposes), as well as tracking its maintenance, service, repair and expense log.

Free versions on iOS and Android, but premium subscriptions available too from R79.99 once-off.

Zomato

While technically it’s a restaurant app, a driver needs to eat, especially when driving long distances or on an exciting road trip. Zomato connects you with thousands of restaurants of all types around the country that have been tried and reviewed.
