Meet the New Mild-Hybrid Renault Duster

Rugged just got smarter: Renault’s Mild-Hybrid SUV

In a segment where SUVs often lean toward all-show or all-expense, the Renault Duster has long been known for its refreshing, down-to-earth design. Since its debut in South Africa in 2013, this budget-friendly favourite has consistently delivered a blend of edgy performance, everyday practicality, and real value. Now, it’s taken another step forward — combining its go-anywhere attitude with fuel-efficient tech to meet the demands of modern motoring.

Renault’s latest redesign

The new Duster embodies the three pillars of the Renault brand: Athletic SUV Design, Active Tech Powertrains, and Advanced Safety and Technology. Each element has been carefully crafted to reflect the Duster’s adventurous spirit, offering style, comfort, and confidence. In a saturated SUV market, the Duster doesn’t just blend in — it remains true to the legacy that has made the Duster a fan favourite, while driving appeal to a new generation of SUV enthusiasts.

Exterior

Renault has gone for a sportier design with the new Duster, emphasising bold, robust lines that enhance its off-road aesthetic while staying true to the signature Duster look. Standout features showcase Renault’s design philosophy — where form meets function — with elements like modular roof bars, Starkle® side and arch protectors, and a sporty tailgate spoiler that hint at its adventurous spirit. And for the outdoor goers, details like the mudguards and side guards have been completely redesigned using recyclable materials — proving that the new Duster blends in with nature in more ways than one.

Interior

While prioritising comfort for both driver and passenger, Renault has enhanced the cabin with smart technology — including a high-mounted centre console and an e-shifter gear lever. The brand’s approach to in-cabin safety highlights how drivers can stay focused on the road, with intuitive controls designed to minimise distractions and keep hands on the wheel throughout the commute.

With the 10.1" OpenR multimedia display, accessing your CarPlay apps is seamless — and you can charge your phone wirelessly, no cables needed.

A standout feature is the YouClip attachment system, designed to keep the interior organised and functional. Multiple anchor points are located throughout the cabin, allowing you to clip on useful accessories like a cupholder, lamp, or hook — all of which can be easily detached and used separately when and where needed.

Assisted Driving Safety System

Apart from its focus on interior safety and comfort, the redesign Duster is packed with assisted driving features. From the Multi-View Camera and Rear Park Assist to Blind Spot Detection, Hill Descent Assist, Hill Start Assist, and Cruise Control with a speed limiter – these features make every mile worth it, whether you’re travelling through the city or heading off-road. Each feature is especially useful in off-road conditions as they provide a clear view of potentially challenging terrain. The camera is super useful for monitoring the vehicle’s blind spots during tight or complex manoeuvres, such as parking in narrow spots and tight corners.

New Gen Powertrain

With five driving modes at your disposal, as well as a ground clearance of up to 217 mm and a high approach angle, off-road adventures will feel effortless.

With that in mind, how well does the 1.3 litre petrol engine stack up against the 1.2 litre Mild-Hybrid Advanced?

The 1.3L Petrol Renault Duster

If you're set on sticking to the traditional petrol-powered motor, the 1.3L turbo petrol Duster won’t disappoint. It delivers a strong 113 kW of power and 250 Nm of torque, so you’ll definitely get a kick from the acceleration. It’s paired with a 7-speed EDC automatic gearbox, which means gear changes are quick and silky smooth — perfect for both city cruising and highway driving. It’s also pretty versatile, with a towing capacity of up to 1,500 kg (braked), so weekend getaways with a trailer or small caravan are totally doable. With a 50-litre fuel tank, you can expect fuel use from around 6.5L/100 km, and CO₂ emissions starting from 147g/km, depending on the model. All in all, it’s a solid all-rounder for everyday use and a little more.

The 1.2L Mild-Hybrid Renault Duster Advanced

The Duster Mild Hybrid Advanced offers drivers a good balance when it comes to performance, handling, and fuel consumption. The Duster runs on a 1.2L turbo engine that gives you plenty of zip with 96 kW of power and 230 Nm of torque. It’s got a 6-speed manual gearbox, so you’re really in control of the drive. You’ll get over 850 km on a full 50-litre tank, and it only guzzles about 5.7L per 100 km — which means fewer stops at the pump and more money in your pocket. It’s also easier on the environment with lower CO₂ emissions. Got a trailer or caravan? It can tow up to 1,580 kg (braked), making it a solid all-rounder for work or weekend getaways.

Models and Price

The 2025 Renault Duster gives you two solid engine options — whether you’re after good old petrol or leaning towards something a bit more fuel-friendly with the mild-hybrid. The 1.3L Turbo petrol comes in two derivatives: the well-equipped Zen for R489,999, and the feature-packed Intens at R519,999

If you’re more into off-roading or just want to go greener, the 1.2L Turbo Mild Hybrid 4x4 goes for R549,999 — perfect for drivers who want a mix of adventure and efficiency without breaking the bank.

Final Thoughts

Whether you're drawn to its rugged design, fuel-saving innovation, or impressive tech features, the 2025 Renault Duster makes a compelling case for itself in South Africa’s competitive SUV landscape. It preserves the essence of the original Duster — no-nonsense, capable, and affordable — while embracing the future with smart powertrains and elevated in-cabin comfort. With both petrol and mild-hybrid options, a bold new look, and features designed for real-world adventures, the new Duster isn’t just keeping up — it’s confidently leading the way for budget-conscious SUV buyers who want more out of every drive.
