2026 Finalists Revealed for Car of the Year South Africa
After 40 years of recognising South Africa’s favourite vehicles, the SAGMJ (South African Guild of Mobility Journalists) have announced the top 18 finalists for the 2026 Car of the Year (COTY) competition. Since 1986, the competition has showcased some of the best vehicles in their respective segments, with experienced judges judging innovation, specifications, value for money, and relevance.
South Africa’s COTY Chairman Thami Masemola told reporters: “Reaching our 40th anniversary reflects decades of independent testing and informed debate. These finalists represent the very best new cars for South African motorists.”
Well, look no further for honest reviews and accurate voting. Think of it like Mzansi’s fun history of recognising some of the top cars in the Mzansi car market.
What Does Car of the Year Look Like?
With over 50 brand-new vehicles shortlisted and launched in 2025, all 18 finalists represent the very best in their segments for 2026’s Car of the Year awards. After review and consideration, the COTY experts assess each car based on these factors: suitability, NCAP ratings, performance, and quality. Thereafter, the three-day review will take place at Zwartkops Raceway in Pretoria.
A great mix of new cars has left an impression, and it’s not just noticeable from the jurors’ votes. Thanks to budget-conscious compact hatchbacks, performance cars, and family-oriented SUVs, a true testament to what automakers have gotten right when it comes to meeting buyers' needs and price points.
It’s no secret that the Chinese car brands have entered the local market with great stride, influencing SA’s new-vehicle sales. Turns out, one-third of the 2026 finalists are Chinese brands, representing their influence and presence on the roads.
