What’s The Difference Between a Maintenance Plan and Service Plan?

Understanding the difference between a car’s Service Plan and Maintenance Plan can help you make the best choice for your vehicle’s care.

Car Service Plans cover the cost of specific components that are recommended with each and every scheduled service. This is usually done at a set time or after a certain number of kilometres travelled – whichever comes first. Typically, this includes essential service items such as filters, spark plugs, and lubricants.

Car Maintenance Plans include everything covered in a Service Plan plus the repair, replacement, or maintenance of wear-and-tear items when needed. This includes parts like brake pads, wiper blades, and battery replacements – giving you more comprehensive vehicle protection and peace of mind.

Exclusive MotorHappy Perks

In addition to avoiding unnecessary time in the workshop, a Maintenance Plan through MotorHappy also unlocks added benefits at no extra cost. One of the most notable perks is Roadside Assistance, providing nationwide support for those unexpected breakdowns or emergencies on South African roads.

Here’s what you can expect:

  • Towing

If you experience a mechanical breakdown or electrical failure (not related to a road accident) and cannot be repaired on the spot, a Roadside Assistance agent will dispatch a team to tow your car to the nearest approved service centre.

  • Car hire or Overnight accommodation

Should your car need to be towed for repairs, you’ll be looked after in the ways of a car rental or overnight accommodation, depending on the situation, ensuring that you’re not left stranded.

  • Message relay

In the event of a breakdown, a message can be sent to a family member, friend, or business associate on your behalf.

  • Tyre change

If you happen to have a flat tyre, we’ll send a contractor to assist with a tyre change, so that you can get back on the road safely.

  • Fuel run

If you’re left without fuel, a contractor will deliver a canister of fuel to help you reach the nearest petrol station.

  • Jump-start

If your battery is flat, a roadside team will be dispatched to help hump-start your vehicle.

  • Key lockout

Accidents happen, especially if you’re locked your keys in the car. Should that happen, a qualified locksmith will be sent to unlock your vehicle.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a Maintenance Plan and a Service Plan?

A Service Plan pays for specified aspects of the recommended services of your car by an approved facility for a specific term or kilometres travelled, whichever comes first, in the Republic of South Africa. Filters, spark plugs and lubricants are normally covered by our car servicing providers. A Maintenance Plan pays for everything included in the Service Plan, plus the replacement, maintenance or repair of specific wear-and-tear parts, when necessary.

What does a Maintenance Plan pay for?

A Maintenance Plan includes everything that is included in the Service Plan, plus the replacement, maintenance or repair of specific wear-and-tear parts, when necessary.

How can I buy a Maintenance Plan?

You can buy a Maintenance Plan in the following ways:

  • Full upfront payment - pay the full price by credit card or EFT
  • Monthly payment option is available only over a period of 4 months.
How do I know if my car is eligible for a Maintenance Plan?

Your car is eligible for a Maintenance Plan if, at the date of purchase, your car:

  • Has travelled less than 80 000 km; and
  • Is less than 4 years old (calculated from date of first registration)
When does my Maintenance Plan start?

Your Maintenance Plan starts at the start date and runs either for a specific term (e.g. 3 years) or kilometres (e.g. 45 000 km), whichever comes first, as stated in the owner’s manual. The plan's months starts on the date of purchase or the end of the existing or manufacturer plan, whichever comes first. If an existing plan or manufacturer plan ends on term instead of kilometres, the contract will be changed with our consent, at your request and by way of a signed document between us.

How long does my Maintenance Plan run for?

Your Maintenance Plan is not a fixed-term contract. It runs for a specific term (e.g. 3 years) or kilometres (e.g. 45 000 km), whichever comes first.

When does my Maintenance Plan end?

Your Maintenance Plan will automatically end when:

  • You reach the prescribed kilometres or term as stipulated in your owner’s manual.
  • You fail to service your car within the manufacturer-specified service interval for the second consecutive time.
  • Your car is damaged beyond repair or destroyed before the expiry of the Maintenance Plan.
Can I cancel my Maintenance Plan?

It is possible to cancel your Maintenance Plan. You can do this by giving us at least 20 business days’ notice in writing, or by contacting our Customer Care Centre at customercare@motorhappy.co.za or phoning us on 0861 642 779. You can also contact the Maintenance Plan administrator directly. Full details of cancellation procedures are available in the Maintenance Plan booklet provided when the plan is purchased.

Can my Maintenance Plan be transferred when I sell my car?

If your Maintenance Plan is fully paid up and you want to sell your car, you can transfer your Maintenance Plan to the new owner.

How do I know when to service my car?

Manufacturers require that you service your car at a specific term or kilometres (e.g. every 15 000 km). Some manufacturers will require that your car be serviced at a specific term (e.g. 12 months from date of first registration) even if you have not driven the specified number of kilometres. Refer to your owner’s manual for requirements.

Does my Maintenance Plan include Roadside Assistance?

Yes: Roadside Assistance will be available from the start date of your Maintenance Plan.
