Standout Features of The Mitsubishi Outlander Sport

The Mitsubishi Outlander Sport has carved out a niche for itself in the competitive compact SUV market, offering a blend of affordability, practicality, and rugged styling. Designed for drivers who want the versatility of an SUV without the bulk, the Outlander Sport promises a comfortable ride, a range of modern features, and a fuel-efficient drive.

In this review, we take a closer look at Mitsubishi’s Outlander Sport capabilities – keep reading for more.

Mitsubishi’s compact SUV stands out in the best possible way

The compact SUV segment in South Africa has been expanding for over a decade. When Mitsubishi introduced the ASX in 2011, it quickly became a leader in the segment due to limited competition at the time. Over the past seven to eight years, consumer preferences have shifted dramatically, with compact SUVs increasingly replacing traditional sedans and hatchbacks. South African drivers are drawn to SUVs for their elevated driving position, enhanced visibility, and ability to navigate the country’s diverse road conditions.

Jeffrey Allison, GM of Marketing and Product at Mitsubishi Motors South Africa adds: “Another key factor behind the rising demand is the lifestyle fit—South Africans are known for their love of outdoor activities, family road trips, and adventure. The Outlander Sport meets these needs with its robust build, ample cargo space, and practical features designed for various terrains.”

Compact SUVs in South Africa

While Mitsubishi does not have production or assembly facilities in South Africa, all vehicles, including the Outlander Sport, are fully imported. This ensures that South African motorists receive vehicles built to the highest standards of Japanese engineering and craftsmanship.

Allison goes on to explain: “Mitsubishi’s unwavering commitment to quality is demonstrated by its exceptionally low in-warranty claim rate of just 0.0035%, highlighting its reputation for reliability.”

Standout Features of the Outlander Sport

One of the most exciting aspects of the Outlander Sport is its premium in-cabin experience. The vehicle combines contemporary interior styling with state-of-the-art technology, providing an immersive experience for both drivers and passengers.

He also noted that “rather than emphasising a single standout feature, Mitsubishi has taken a holistic approach to enhancing the driving experience. From the premium interior design to avionics-style instrumentation and driver scoring, every element of the Outlander Sport is crafted to provide maximum comfort and convenience.”

The Outlander GL model comes equipped with 17” alloy wheels, a sporty gloss black front grille, and a rear spoiler with a high-mount stop light. It also features Bi-functional LED Daytime Running Lamps [DRL], and LED side turn signals on door mirrors. Additional highlights include a welcome light, full LED rear combination lamp (stop/tail/turn/back), and coming home light for added convenience.

With five colours to choose from, you’re guaranteed to turn heads and enjoy the ride in style.

Performance

The combination of its four driving modes and high-end audio system ensures that both the driver and passengers enjoy a refined, engaging ride.

The Outlander Sport is powered by a 1.5L naturally aspirated engine paired with a CVT gearbox, delivering 77kW power and 141 Nm of torque. Additionally, the vehicle includes four distinct driving modes—Normal, Wet, Gravel, and Mud—allowing drivers to adapt to different road conditions effortlessly.

Maximising Fuel Efficiency

This feisty compact SUV is equipped with an integrated driver scoring system that analyses acceleration, steering inputs, and braking patterns. By providing real-time feedback on driving behaviour, this system helps motorists optimise fuel efficiency. Smooth acceleration, selecting the appropriate driving mode, and routine vehicle maintenance all contribute to achieving the best possible fuel economy.

Safety Innovations

While official safety ratings may vary across different regions, the Outlander Sport (also known as the X-Force in Indonesia) has received a 5-star safety rating from ASEAN NCAP. This model brings a host of new advanced safety features that were not available in its predecessor, the ASX.

Key safety enhancements include:

  • Drive Mode Selector: Optimises vehicle performance for varying road conditions.
  • Rear Parking Sensors: Aids in parking and reversing with greater confidence.
  • Blind Spot Warning: Alerts drivers of vehicles in their blind spots, reducing collision risks.
  • Rear Cross Traffic Alert: Provides an added layer of awareness when reversing from parking spots.

These safety advancements make the Outlander Sport one of the most secure and driver-friendly SUVs in its class.

Personalisation and Accessories

Unlike some vehicles that require multiple add-ons to feel complete, the Outlander Sport comes fully loaded with premium features. This means customers can enjoy a high-end experience straight out of the showroom, without the need for additional extras.

Recognitions and Awards

The Outlander Sport’s striking design has earned it several prestigious awards, reinforcing its appeal. Notable accolades include:

  • 2024 iF Design Award
  • 2023 Good Design Award (Japan Institute of Design Promotion)
  • Gold Award for Best Transportation Design (2023 VMARK Vietnam Design Awards)

These recognitions highlight the vehicle’s excellence in both aesthetics and functionality, further solidifying its status as a top contender in the compact SUV market.
