Mercedes-Maybach GLS SUV: Luxury Maximised

In April 2023, Mercedes Benz released the facelift of the GLS SUV series, including its most powerful and luxurious versions: the GLS 63 and the Maybach GLS600. The GLS series offers the largest passenger vehicles made by the German brand. In this article, we will review the highly anticipated Maybach GLS600, which will arrive in South Africa this year and is already available for pre-ordering.

The Mercedes-Maybach GLS600 is perhaps the full-size SUV equivalent of the S-class limousines, and the Maybach is ‘the cream of the crop’ of the series. Mercedes Benz highlights its top-notch models with long hoods and prominent grilles. The new front grille has been slightly enlarged, the front bumper was redesigned, and the massive lower air vent was replaced by a more sober configuration. This was a great design decision and one of the many cases where less is more. The rear end remains the same, and the taillights preserve their shape, but they now feature a different lighting pattern.

In addition to the earliest 19” and 22” rim options, Mercedes Benz now offers a 23” multi-spoke wheel design. The brand also introduced two new dual-tone colour combinations exclusive to the Maybach models.

On the inside, the instrument panel and infotainment screen received a full software upgrade and new graphics, the steering wheel was redesigned, the upholstery was updated, and new finishes were added.

The facelifted Maybach GLS600 is powered by the same V8 twin-charged 4.0-liter petrol engine that propelled the previous version. The engine produces 410kW (558PS) and 730Nm of torque, plus an extra 16kW (22PS) available for short periods each time the EQ Boost is engaged. The SUV can go from 0-100 km/h in 4.9 seconds with an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h, which is impressive for such a massive vehicle weighing over 2,700 kg.

The fully pneumatic suspension, equipped with the AMG Active Ride Control, also received a software update to make it more precise and responsive. This system enhances the vehicle’s safety and driving experience by automatically adjusting the suspension in real time.

Like the pre-facelift version, the Mercedes-Maybach GLS600’s interior is all luxury. The standard GLS's 7-passenger capacity has been reduced to four seats when equipped with the optional central console that houses a 9.6-liter refrigerated compartment. A five-seat version is available for users who prefer maximizing the passenger capacity; however, it’s important to note that the fifth seat is not as comfortable and wide as the rest of the seats, which is not very practical for long trips.

Despite its sophisticated urban look, it’s worth mentioning that the Maybach GLS600 is an authentic SUV with outstanding off-roading capabilities and features that make the most of the powerful engine, the AWD transmission, and the active pneumatic suspension with height adjustment.

All trims offer a fully panoramic roof, independent rear climate control, LED interior ambient lights with 64 colour options that can be switched from the central screen, genuine leather upholstery, heated and ventilated seats with massage function, and many other exclusive luxury features. All models include a 3D sound system, headphones, personalized pillows for the rear seats, and a tablet to access the vehicle’s most advanced configuration options.

The Mercedes-Maybach GLS600 SUV starts from R4,344,691 and rises depending on the options you choose in the Mercedes Benz vehicle configurator. Some options like the new 23” 7-spoke alloy wheels and some dual-tone colour configurations are only available for the “Night Series” package, which costs an extra R568,000. (Prices correct at time of publication.)

The Mercedes-Maybach GLS600 SUV offers outstanding standard equipment and plenty of options that help make each vehicle even more unique. The customisation and luxury level are entirely up to the buyer. The final price can go beyond R5,000,000 when all the options are selected. You can browse the Mercedes Benz online configurator, build your own version, check the prices, preview the result, and calculate the final estimated price without leaving the comfort of your home.
