For about five decades, the Range Rover has set the standard for British motoring perfection, especially in the luxury SUV market. The Range Rover Velar is one of the company’s latest additions, and it offers excellent options if you’re looking for a high-end hybrid compact SUV, diesel or petrol.
Its latest version, the new Range Rover Velar is out and about. Read our review to find out more:
The great thing about luxury cars is that they’re enjoyable, whether you’re behind the steering wheel or relaxing in the back seat. When it comes to driving, the thrill comes from the Range Rover Velar’s 2-litre hybrid diesel engine (D200) that is good for 196 horsepower. Opting for the 3-litre (D300) version gets you an extra 100 horses. At the top of the line sits a 2-litre petrol plug-in hybrid (P400e) engine that produces almost a whopping 400 hp.
Expect nothing but good manners and an instant soundless power delivery from all three engines.
Also, these engines send power to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic gearbox that is described by critics as smooth-shifting and effortless.
As a result, the 2024 Range Rover Velar can accelerate from 0 to 100 kph in just 5.4 seconds if you go for the P400e. With the D300 engine, you'll reach the same speed in a respectable 6.5 seconds.
A true sign of a Range Rover is its practicality, and the Velar doesn’t disappoint. The D300 takes the cake here, being able to tow up to 2500 kg (about the weight of an elephant), followed by the D200 at 2400kg. Adamant about going completely hybrid? No worries as the P400e will all pull a decent 2000kg.
In terms of fuel consumption, the Velar PHEV is the best choice here, offering up to 2.2 litres/100 km. You can also expect an all-electric range of around 50 km.
The next best thing is the D200 which does 5.9 litres/100 km, followed by the D300 at 7.3.
It’s not wrong to expect a luxurious cabin – it is a Range Rover after all. The cabin is sleek stylish, and surprisingly simple for today’s day and age. The quality and selection of the materials used in the interior are impeccable as they look and feel top-notch. You can expect a quiet and comfortable ride.
As far as tech is concerned, the highlights include standard goodies such as dual-zone climate control, 14-way memory seats for the driver, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror. You get a 11.4-inch touchscreen with a Meridian sound system as standard, as well as Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
There’s a whole suite of standard safety features which includes automated emergency braking, rear cross-traffic alerts, adaptive cruise control, parking aids, and blind spot assist.
Of course, as you move up the trims, you unlock a lot more such as leather seats that are heated and cooled, with massage features also available.
Despite being a compact SUV, the 2024 Range Rover Velar offers plenty of legroom and headroom for all five occupants. You won’t find anyone complaining about the trunk space either as it can hang with the best in its class.
On the outside, it has a distinct Range Rover shape which makes it stand out. The standard 20-inch Satin Grey alloys complement it perfectly.
So, what exactly is the 2024 Range Velar’s price? Well, if you opt for the base model – the Velar D200 Dynamic SE – it will set you back around R1,670,900. Expect to pay at least R1,857,100 Rands for the next trim level – the Velar D300 Dynamic SE. The Velar P400e Dynamic SE will cost you at least R2,093,300 Rands.
