The funky Opel Mokka has our attention

The third-generation Opel Mokka has landed on South African shores, and it’s bold, funky and powerful.  The GS Line even comes with a massage function in the front seats.

The new Opel Mokka is available in two variants - the Elegance and the top-spec GS Line. The Corsa-based utility vehicle uses just one powertrain for both trim levels. The stylish, small crossover gets a 1.2-litre 3-cylinder turbo-petrol mill that is good for 96 kW and 230 Nm. The engine mates to an 8-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive and allows you to change gears through paddle shifters on the steering wheel, as well.

The estimated 6.1 L/100 km fuel economy of the bold Opel Mokka coupled with its 44-litre fuel tank translates to over 700 km drive range on a full tank.

The best thing about the striking Mokka is its long list of standard features. The Elegance gets a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, a 7-inch digital driver’s display, a multifunction steering wheel with paddle shifters, cloth upholstery, and automatic climate control.

Besides, the lane-keep assist, forward brake assist, blind-spot detection, and cruise control are also part of the standard driver assistance features.

The range-topping GS Line spices up the Mokka’s appeal through a bigger 10-inch touchscreen infotainment system and a 12.0-inch digital instrument cluster, leather upholstery, and a massage function for the front occupants. Other technologies that make the offering more appealing are Matrix LED headlights, adaptive cruise control, active lane-keep assist, and forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking and pedestrian detection.

Before we forget, both the Elegance and GS Line models get heated seats and 17-inch rims with bi-colour alloys for the Elegance and black ones for the GS Line.

Thanks to various weight-saving measures, the new Mokka is 120kg lighter than its predecessor. You can really feel it when you get behind the wheel. While you may think the 1.2-litre three-cylinder will feel underpowered, automotive journalists so far have reported otherwise. They found the powerplant to be pleasantly responsive in different conditions. The chassis and suspension are reportedly tidy, particularly at speed over bumpy roads.

The transmission changes gear smoothly, and you get the paddle shifters to make the driving more engaging.

The 2022 Opel Mokka Elegance starts at R469,900, whereas the GS Line’s price tag passes half a million Rand - R519,900, to be exact. Both the models give buyers a 4-year/60,000 km service plan and a 3-year/120,000 km warranty. (Prices correct at time of publication.)

The new Opal Mokka is a radical departure from its previous generation thanks to its new design, peppy powertrain, and state-of-the-art cabin facilities. It would appeal more to upwardly mobile young adults.
