The Subaru Outback 2018

Reviewed: The Subaru Outback 2018

The 2018 Subaru Outback excels in safety, practicality and drivability.

There are many competitors in the small SUV department, and the 2018 Subaru Outback is up there with interesting new features, and a five-star rating, earning it accolades on the safety front.

The facelifted Outback comes with two engine options- the smaller 4-cylinder manages a fairly good fuel consumption, while the 6-cylinder doesn’t really match its competitors’ economy. The Outback comes with some interesting features, such as the all-wheel-drive and active torque vectoring system, which helps the vehicle’s performance off-road. There’s evendecent downhill control, and the X-mode feature that uses the torque vectoring feature, maximises traction when the going gets tough.

Starting at R579 000, the 2.5i-S ES four-cylinder boxer engine pushes out 129kW/235Nm, and averages an overall fuel consumption of 7,3 L/100km. The engine is powerful enough to get the Subaru from standstill to 100kph in 10,2 seconds.

The larger 3.6R-ES six-cylinder boxer engine (R649 000) kicks out a total power output of 191kW/350Nm, and races to 100kph in just 7,6 seconds, which is respectable once you look at the rather lengthy size of the Outback. The average fuel consumption is 9,9L/100km.

The newOutback has LED daytime running headlights, a redesigned front grill and number, front camera, side cameras as well as side mirror turn signals. There are also some new 18-inch alloy wheels to fit the new design, which come in a two-tone gloss sliver with black finishes. The rest of the Outback is finished with some new chrome pieces all around the vehicle as well as new side skirts and bumpers.

Practicality and space are some of the key selling features of the Outback, and the cargo area has been boosted to an impressive 512 litres, and an even more impressive 1 801 litres with the rear seats folded downwards. The interior has also taken a big leap in the modern technology genre, with the new car having a 7-inch infotainment system, which allows access to all the interior capabilities as well as Apple CarPlay, and a 7-speaker Harman Kardon sound system. It’s perfect for the size of the vehicle, making the sound feel clean, full and warm.

The exterior features great-looking 18-inch alloy wheels that suit the car beautifully, and are complemented by the fiercer front grill and bumpers. The Outback also comes with roof rails as a standard, for all those great outdoor adventures.

It’s hard to find better competitors in the class, and the Outback is ahead of the rest thanks to its price, drivability and safety.
