One of the best ways to enjoy an incredible summer’s day? Take a breezy road trip or an afternoon drive in a convertible! Because we’re in the height of summer and we love driving, we’ve been day-dreaming about some of our favourite convertibles on South Africa’s roads.
What do you think of our list of the top three convertibles available in South Africa?
Many people who are looking to purchase a sports car will consider a Porsche, and it’s not hard to see why. The 718 Boxster is the latest version Porche convertible, starting at around R950k* and can top out at R1.4 million for the GTS model. All models are available with the refined PDK gearbox but can be optioned with a 6-speed manual on spyder models. 257-309kW is available depending on which Boxtser model is chosen. The 718 spyder is the most powerful with 309kW/420Nm, and can reach 100kph in just 4.1 seconds and a top speed of 301km/h.
Overall the Boxster offers great value for money, serious performance with excellent build quality and sporty genetics.
The biggest BMW sedan available is the 8 series. It’s also the most expensive and most luxurious. The BMW M850i has a fire breathing 4.4 litre V8 that cranks out 390kW and 750Nm and easily reaches 100kph in just 3.9 seconds. The xDrive in BMW language stands for all-wheel-drive, which could be crucial with a vehicle that produces so much power. BMW has loaded the options list on the 8 series, which can easily bump up the price of the M850i. This could burn a big hole in your pocket as the M850i starts around R2 million*. However, the 8 series is one of the best luxury vehicles any automotive company has to offer, and the M850i helps add some sporty characteristics to the 8 series. Put all of this together and the M850i is one of BMW’s finest convertibles available.
Many people might be shocked to find the Mustang on our list but hear me out. The Mustang GT is a slightly more reasonably priced convertible in South Africa. A GT car should be the type of car that is exciting to drive but is easily capable of doing long road trips and journeys. The new Ford Mustang 5.0 is available in a convertible version and it falls under a Grand Touring vehicle, thanks to plenty of boot and storage space. Also, let’s not forget how awesome it would feel to drive a car with a heritage like the Mustang’s
Even though the Mustang is the cheapest car on our list doesn’t mean it’s not a serious sports car. The Mustang GT convertible manages to put 331kW to the crank along with 529Nm from a 5.0 liter naturally-aspirated V8. 0-100kph can be achieved in just 4.5 seconds and the Mustang GT will hit a limited top speed of 250km/h. Pricing for the Mustang GT convertible starts @R900k* and should fall just short of R1 million with a few optional extras.
What convertibles would you add to the list?
