Cheapest Options for Car Licence Renewals

The Cheapest Car Licence Renewal Options in South Africa

From standing in line at the post office or testing stations to embracing digital options, renewing a licence in South Africa can be frustrating—especially depending on how you choose to do it. With around 12 million registered vehicles, delays and backlogs are common. Motorists from across the country know very well that we all have to go through it.

So, what are our options?

Online Car Licence Renewal

Online renewals have become the most convenient way to dodge long queues, though 2025 has fewer options than in previous years. Here’s what’s still available as reported by BusinessTech and Top Auto:

  • Natis Online: The government portal, open to all vehicle owners. You can expect costs around R171 for admin and delivery fees combined.
  • Bank Apps: FNB and Capitec allow their customers to renew through mobile banking, with FNB costing roughly R171.
  • Retailers / Third-Party Services: Shoprite Money Market and Spar provide renewal services in some locations across the country for an estimated amount of R185-R199.

Bonus: Online renewal is not just faster, it also helps you save on fuel or taking time off work just to stand in line.

How to Renew Car Licence Online

Getting Started

Once you get the renewal notice in the post, you can get on with the process. The great thing about this site is that anyone can use it. If this is your first time, it all starts with signing up to the National Traffic Information System (eNATIS); you can do this via mobile or computer. You will need to follow the instructions and submit relevant information.

The Renewal Process

Once you sign in, the options that are offered are as follows:

  1. Drivers Licence Card
  2. Learners Licence Test
  3. Drivers Licence Test
  4. PrDP Application
  5. Renew Vehicle Licence
  6. Request a slot

Click on the renew vehicle option and follow the prompts.

Note: If you did not get the renewal notice in the post, you may have to download and fill in a MVL1 application. You can find the document on the eNATIS system.

How Collection Works

If you decide to collect from the post office, bring your green ID book or smart card, and renewal notice. Once you’ve taken your renewal notice and made payment (whether at the traffic department or post office), you’ll be able to collect it then and there.

If you’ve gone through the eNATIS system, all you have to do is pay and fill in the address for delivery. You should receive your new licence disc directly from the courier within 48 to 72 hours.

*The cost of your new licence disc will depend on the vehicle’s size and weight.

Even though you have a 21-day grace period after the disc has expired, remember to apply for renewal 4 weeks BEFORE your disc expires.

What You Need to Renew Your Licence

Whether online or offline, you’ll need a few basics ready:

  1. Your vehicle registration number and details.
  2. Payment for the vehicle licence fee, plus RTMC/admin fee and any delivery costs.
  3. All outstanding fines or fees cleared.

Should you renew in person, you’ll also need your current licence disc and supporting documents such as the application form, Identity document or driver’s licence.

Car Licence Renewal Form

To speed things up for you, you’ll find the necessary vehicle licence renewal forms offered on South Africa’s Post Office’s website.

Cost of Car Licence Renewal by Province (2025)
