Inside the 2026 Kia Sportage Facelift

2026 Kia Sportage Facelift Review: Fresh Upgrades with Local Appeal

Kia’s bestselling company SUV, the Sportage, has received its mid-cycle facelift for the 2026 model year. First revealed in the UK in June 2025, this update, known internally as the NQ5 facelift, hints strongly at what South African buyers can expect when it arrives locally later this year or early next.

While official local pricing and dates remain under wraps, here’s a deep dive into the improvements.

Kia’s Fresh Look

Kia's refreshed 2026 Sportage is more than just a facelift—it's a carefully considered upgrade that combines modern design, intuitive tech, and enhanced efficiency. For South African motorists, it promises a compelling blend of style and substance, especially as family SUVs grow in popularity.

Exterior Design

This facelift brings a refreshed front end closely aligned with Kia’s “opposites United” design language, matching looks seen on the EV3,EV9, and Sorento. Key visual upgrades include:

The latest iteration of the Sportage boasts a range of striking features, including sleek LED Daytime Running Lights that enhance visibility and safety. The vehicle showcases a wider “Tiger Nose” grille, which not only adds to its bold aesthetic but also improves airflow, contributing to overall performance. Additionally, the chunkier bumpers provide a more robust look, giving the Sportage a commanding presence on the road.

Equipped with a new selection of alloy wheels ranging from 17 to 19 inches, particularly on the sporty GT-Line trims, the Sportage exudes a sense of dynamism and style. Moving to the rear, you will find an updated rear bumper and light clusters that incorporate subtle LED animations, adding a touch of sophistication.

These thoughtful design tweaks not only offer a more aggressive and contemporary appearance but also pay homage to Kia’s innovative EV design ethos. As a result, the Sportage significantly elevates its visual appeal, making a strong statement in South Africa’s fiercely competitive SUV segment.

Interior Updates

Inside, the Sportage has received a comprehensive interior overhaul that enhances both aesthetics and practicality. A sleeker, more horizontal dashboard design now gives the cabin a roomier, more open feel. Dominating the front is a pair of curved 12.3-inch screens that seamlessly blend the infotainment system with the driver display – mirroring the look of Kia’s more upmarket models.

Design elements have been refined, with a new steering wheel and updated air vents borrowed from Kia’s EV line-up and the Tasman Bakkie. These touches add a premium, futuristic vibe. Higher-spec variants will also offer a Head-Up Display (HUD), projecting key driving information directly into the driver’s line of sight – a useful feature for long-distance travel.

Kia has opted for quality materials throughout. Expect two-tone upholstery with recycled, suede-like inserts, and brushed metal finishes – replacing the glass and plastics of previous models. The result is a more refined and durable cabin experience. Added to this are practical tech upgrades like wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus additional USB-C ports – ideal for navigation and device charging on the go.

Safety and Tech Features

As a society that prioritises connectivity and convenience, the Sportage delivers. Over-the-air (OTA) software updates and feature-on-demand (FOD) capabilities future-proof the vehicle, with local ota functionality expected to roll out in due course.

Driver assist features also receive a significant boost. Adaptive cruise control, lane-centering, and enhanced autonomous emergency braking (AEB) are part of the package. Top trims may also include 360-degree cameras and Kia’s advanced Highway Driving Assist 2, depending on local specifications.

The available Head-Up Display is particularly well-suited to SA’s long stretches of highway, improving driving safety and ease. In addition, smoother acceleration and comfort-focused updates: such as toddler-friendly driving modes reported in UK reviews – suggest the facelift caters to real-world family needs across diverse road conditions.

Together, these technologies make the Sportage not just a smarter SUV, but a safer and more intuitive choice for South African families and commuters alike.

Power and Performance

Under the bonnet, Kia retains its proven engine line-up but with performance enhancements. The 1.6-litre turbocharged T-GDI petrol engine delivers about 148kW in UK trims and is likely to match or slightly exceed the current South African version’s 132kW. It will continue to be paired with either a manual gearbox or a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT).

More notable, hybrid options bring a substantial performance jump. Overseas models are rated at approximately 175kW, available in both front and all-wheel-drive configurations. These hybrids align well with South Africa’s growing appetite for greener, fuel-efficient motoring. While plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and mild-hybrid versions have been previewed in Europe, Kia South Africa has yet to confirm availability.

Expected Launch and Pricing

While Kia South Africa has yet to confirm an official launch date, local release is expected by late 2025 or early 2026, following the UK rollout in Q3 2025.

For those in the market, it’s worth keeping an eye on Kia’s official updates in the coming months as more details emerge around trim levels and final pricing.

Looking Forward to the Kia Sportage Facelift

As one of the more anticipated mid-size SUVs heading into 2026, the updated Sportage has the right mix of evolution and innovation. If you’re in the market for a refined, tech-rich SUV that meets the demands of modern South African life, the facelifted Sportage is one to watch.

Stay tuned for local announcements as Kia finalises launch timelines, trim specs, and pricing – this might just be your next smart SUV purchase.
